INTRODUCTION: WHY MAKE DRIED ORANGE SLICES?
Orange slices are versatile treats that can be used in many ways: as decorations, dessert toppings, or even as a natural snack. This easy recipe provides step-by-step instructions to create perfectly dried slices with a beautiful color and ideal texture.
THE INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR DRIED ORANGE SLICES
Before starting, ensure you have the right ingredients and tools to make your slices:
INGREDIENTS
- Oranges: 2–3, preferably organic to avoid pesticides on the peel.
- Sugar (optional): A light sprinkle for a glossy, sweet finish.
EQUIPMENT:
- A sharp knife for thin, even slices.
- A baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- An oven or a dehydrator.
STEP 1: PREPARING ORANGES
-
WASH THE ORANGES
To get rid of any dirt, rinse the oranges with cold water and give them a gentle scrape.
. Pat them dry with a clean cloth.
-
SLICE THE ORANGES
Using a sharp knife, cut the oranges into thin rounds (about 2–3 mm thick). Slices will dry more quickly if they are thinner. -
REMOVE THE SEEDS
If you notice seeds, carefully remove them with the tip of the knife.
TIP: Use a zester to collect orange zest before slicing for use in other recipes.
STEP 2: DRYING DRIED ORANGE SLICES IN THE OVEN
OPTION 1: OVEN-DRIED ORANGE SLICES
- Preheat the oven
Set your oven to a low temperature, about 70°C (160°F). - Prepare the slices
Arrange the orange slices on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. To guarantee even drying, make sure they don’t overlap. - Drying process
Place the tray in the middle of the oven and let the slices dry for 3–4 hours. Flip them every hour to prevent sticking. - Check readiness
The slices are done when they are completely dry but slightly flexible.
OPTION 2: USING A DEHYDRATOR
If you have a dehydrator, set it to 55°C (130°F) and dry the slices for 6–8 hours. This method better preserves the bright orange color.
